The Former Meier & Frank Department Store Has Been Honored With National Historic Preservation Awards

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded Portland Oregon’s beloved Meier & Frank department store a 2009 National Preservation Honor Award.  Rehabilitation of the 15-story full block building into a 331 room five-star luxury hotel and ground floor retail utilized a mixture of modern green technology and preservation of iconic architectural characteristics. “Thanks to tireless work by an array of public agencies, private-sector partners, and visionary architects and consultants, what was once the biggest building in Oregon has been reborn” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Furthermore, the American Institute of Architecture Portland chapter has awarded the former department store with a 2009 AIA Design Award.

Court Square Center is Announced a Finalist in the 2009 Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation

Memphis Tennessee’s Court Square Center is an outstanding example of innovative design through historic rehabilitation, modern design and green technology.  The Center is combined of three distinct buildings; two historic, the1885 Lowenstein Brothers department store and the 1924 Lincoln American Tower, the third, a modern building design.

Court Square Center’s use of  historic and modern architectures has been honored as one of three 2009 finalist in the coveted J. Timothy Anderson Awards falling under the category of Best Historic Rehabilitation Utilizing New Market Tax Credits from National Housing and Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA). “The ‘Timmy Awards’ were created to honor outstanding real estate projects that involve rehabilitation of older, historic buildings using the federal historic rehabilitation tax credit. Scoring is based on overall design and quality, interpretation and respect of historic elements, innovative approach to construction and use of building materials, impact on the community and financial and market success of the project”.  

The National Housing and Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA) 2009 award winners will be announced November 3, 2009 at their National Fall Developers Conference.

Against All Odds, Memphis Store Reopens

This Article from the National Trust of Historic Preservation, highlights the 1885 Lowenstein Building located in downtown Memphis, TN.  This building sat vacant from 1980 - 2000 and was threatened to be demolished in 1996.  Heritage successfully secured federal tax credits for the former department store.

Blackstone Hotel Grand Reopening
