Project Details

The Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company located in the Bright Leaf Historic District of Durham, North Carolina was built in 1948 and was considered the most modern cigarette factory in the world. The building had been vacant for decades before a Baltimore-based company, Wexford Science and Technology, completed an innovative adaptive reuse project. Wexford began redeveloping the property in 2017 now known as the Chesterfield building; it features a six-story atrium, and gathering space core. The building provided the anchor tenant, Duke University, with the opportunity to engage with private sector entrepreneurs and provide spacing for its School of Medicine and School of Engineering researchers.
